Welcome to Burlington Maternity Services. We aim to facilitate you in finding the most appropriate type of post natal assistance for your family situation. Our service is professional and yet at the same time warm and friendly.

WHAT COVER DO I REQUIRE?

This is, of course, a purely personal preference.
Please try and consider the following points:-
• Do we want someone living with us on a 24 hour basis?
• Would our family be better suited to days or nights only cover?
• Would we prefer to mainly "go it alone" and book the services of a Consultant to provide background support over a period of months? They could then address specific issues as they arise.
Also keep in mind whether or not it is essential for you to have a highly experienced Post Natal Carer bringing their expertise to your family. Alternatively, you may be someone who feels fairly confident with regards the day to day mechanisms of caring for a newborn. It might be that you already have one or two children. You could perhaps benefit from "an extra pair of hands", flexible in their approach yet who is equipped with the knowledge to assist baby into a good routine. Maybe a Newly Qualified Post Natal Carer would be best suited to your family setting.

MATERNITY SERVICES: THE OPTIONS: WHAT WE CAN DO FOR YOU:

• POST NATAL CARERS (MATERNITY NURSES)
These candidates will be drawn from a range of backgrounds. Some may have been Neo-Natal or Paediatric Nurses. They could have also been Midwives or Health Visitors. Others might have come from a Nanny based career with an emphasis upon babies. There is no one clear route into Post Natal Caring (Maternity Nursing), nor one clear approach to this work.

We ask that ladies on our register have at least two years of referenced Post Natal Care (Maternity Nursing) experience.

They offer a service with a focus upon parents and newborn. They are responsible for baby's laundry and for keeping the nursery clean and tidy. They also can advise you regarding the purchase of relevant equipment and items necessary to prepare for the new arrival. In addition, they will be able to assist you in the establishment of relevant feeding and sleeping routines if that is what you require.

Many are highly knowledgeable with regards breast feeding and getting it established, if that is your wish. They are equally attuned to the needs of a mum wishing to bottle feed.

Some offer cover on a 24 hour basis for 5, 5 and a half or 6 days a week. Although on call 24 hours a day, it would be unfair to expect anyone to be on full duty for 24 hours at a time. They certainly would need to be given between 2-4 hours a day in which to rest and relax. This makes for a much more effective carer in the long run.

Some candidates offer cover on a days or nights only basis. The shift would be a minimum of 10 - 12 hours.

The wearing of uniform is also down to individual preferences.

An experienced Post Natal Carer (Maternity Nurse) is a wonderful asset to a family. It encourages little one to swiftly settle into the family environment. It also enables a potentially stressful period to be a happy one!!

• NEWLY QUALIFIED POST NATAL CARERS (MATERNITY NURSES)
These are candidates who have developed a strong background in baby care but not necessarily within the field of Post Natal Care (Maternity Nursing). They will have all recently completed an accredited Training Course for Post Natal Carers (approved by Social Services) equivalent to an NVQ Level 3.

They are looking to develop their CV's in this area.

We can introduce you to a range of fully vetted candidates. They will undertake all the duties expected of an experienced candidate at a very competitive rate. In return, you supply them with a reference, acting as a point of referral for other potential clients.

A candidate such as this would be well suited to 2nd and 3rd time mums, providing that extra bit of flexible support, so vital when introducing a new arrival into the family.

• CONSULTANTS - ADVISORY SERVICE FOR NEW MUMS
These candidates focus upon specialised areas of baby behaviour eg. Sleep training/dummy withdrawal/converting from breast to bottle feeding/weening/ general advice regarding feeding and sleeping routines and other issues.

They offer a variety of tailor made packages to suit your requirements.

These include:-

• One day and a series of telephone consultations.
• One night, one day and a series of telephone consultations.
THE SELECTION PROCESS EXPLAINED

Once you are clear in your mind as to the nature of cover that you require, your next step is to contact Burlington Nannies Maternity Services.

They will take down your specifications asking you a range of questions to ensure that they can best match you to your ideal candidate.

They will call relevant candidates, available within your requested time frame, and will talk to them about your position. Their details will then be forwarded to you as relevant.

For each candidate, you will receive a profile, a comprehensive CV, a sample of references and relevant contact numbers. This can be forwarded via email or post as you prefer.

It is then a good idea to have an initial telephone conversation with those candidates in whom you are interested. During this conversation it might well be appropriate to arrange a face to face meeting. However, please remember that a lot of the candidates only have one 24 hour period a week when they are not working. As a result, their availability to meet might be limited. Sometimes it can speed up the selection process by conducting in depth telephone interviews as required. Should your interviews become too spread out, you are in danger of finding that the first candidate you interviewed is already booked by the time you meet the fifth.

With your interviews complete and your selection made, you will need to contact Burlington Nannies. We will confirm the booking with your chosen candidate, agreeing a start date and an end date. We also advise you to call at least two of your candidate's previous clients and take a reference. We will then forward a letter of confirmation both to you and your chosen candidate. We will also inform the other candidates you interviewed that you have now found someone suitable.

Once your Post Natal Carer commences their employment with you, Burlington Nannies will contact you to ensure that all is well. We will provide further support at this stage if it is required.

IMPORTANT POINTS TO CONSIDER WHEN SECURING A POST NATAL CARER

• Post Natal Carers are self-employed. They are, therefore, keen to secure employment as far in advance as possible. They are not in a position to leave large gaps between each booking since if they do not work, they do not get paid.
• Be very clear about the start and end date of your placement. Once agreed, you are financially responsible to the candidate for this period of time.
• Should baby arrive later than your start date, you will need to start to pay your candidate from that agreed date. You are paying them to remain exclusively available to your family.
• You might have booked your Post Natal Carer for a 6 week run but if baby is a week late, you could end up with only 5 weeks of her time. She cannot guarantee you an extra week of work to make up for baby's late arrival. This will depend entirely on the start date of her next booking.
• To reduce the retaining period, many clients make the start date of the booking a week later than the due date. For twins, it is advised to set the start date around weeks 38-39 of your pregnancy.
• Should baby arrive earlier than anticipated, there are often excellent candidates who can assist you for a few days. You need not struggle on your own.
• Once you have booked your Post Natal Carer, you will be asked to forward a deposit of one week's salary. It usually constitutes payment for the final week of the booking. This acts as your guarantee to the candidate that you will use their services.
• It is also accepted practice that the client will cover the travel costs incurred by a candidate coming to interview. The client will also cover the initial travel costs to a placement and the final travel costs from a placement.
